A slight departure from the literal theme of this blog, I was wondering about the realised dreams of those who thought they could never achieve their goals when I saw a video of actress Nikki Blonsky getting a huge applause at the Plus Size New York Fashion Show. With the fashion industry suffering from an infuriatingly contrary character, I initially thought the involved of plus size models was just another gimmick to get media attention. The Fashion Industry lectures that, darling, it’s great to be curvy; and yet we’re all getting morbidly obese and dying of heart disease. And whilst being shown slithers of fabric on size zero 6ft-something “women” we’re told how, woe is me, they so wished they were like “real” women who didn’t have to suffer the lives much like protagonists in a Greek tragedy - so beautiful, yet so tortured by fame, fortune and french fries.
The dreams of so many is just to be accepted and appreciated for who they are. And that is where I thought that Nikki Blonsky was living her dream. Despite barely standing five feet tall while wearing a pair of black stilettos, actress Nikki Blonsky got a thunderous applause from the audience as she strutted the catwalk at the Plus Size New York Fashion Show earlier this month.
The actress, best known for playing the lead role in blockbuster film “Hairspray,” certainly grabbed media attention at she walked down the red carpet at New York Fashion Week. The Plus Size Fashion Show featured items sold online at online retail site, One Stop Plus, which caters to women who wear size twelve and up (UK size 14). The standing-room only venue featured plus size models walking down the catwalk with the latest designs in attractive colours and hues, such as aqua, peach, blue, coral, cream, mauve and citrus green. Joining Blonsky at the stage are plus size model Emme and actress Gabourey Sidibe, an Oscar-nominated actress for the film “Precious.”
Both ladies may have achieved a dream long discarded as impossible, but I just wonder if the Fashion Industry will ever really wake up to real womens’ needs and invite the rest of us in from the cold.
